Apply for a permit online
Follow numbered steps to choose a permit type, add the parcel and contacts, upload documents, review fees and submit. You can save and resume at any step.
Before you start
An application cannot submit until required fields, required contacts and required documents for its type are present. Gathering these first saves a return trip.
- The parcel number, street address or parcel identifier for the work, one record can link to more than one parcel
- Contact details for the applicant, owner and any contractor, with name, email and phone for each role
- The required documents for the type you will choose, plans or supporting files in the file types the screen lists
- Project details such as description of work, valuation or size where the form asks for them
- A verified portal account, see Create a portal account
Steps
The wizard asks in order. The chosen type cannot be changed after submission without a staff correction logged on the record, so read the type description before you choose it.
1. Choose a type
Search permit types by plain description. Open a type to read required documents and fees, then choose Start. Building, trade, right of way, fire, health and other types follow the same order.
2. Add the location
Enter the parcel or address for the work. Pick the exact site from the list the search returns, add more than one parcel or address where the project needs it, and check zoning and owner details shown from town parcel data.
3. Add details and contacts
Enter project details and answer the type questions. Add contacts by role, applicant, owner, contractor and other roles the type requires. A record needs at least one parcel or address and at least one contact before it can be submitted.
4. Upload documents
Upload each required document, choose its type, add a short description, and confirm the file was received. See Upload plans and documents for file checks.
5. Review and submit
Check every step on the review page. Fix any missing item the screen lists, certify where the form asks, then submit. Submitting assigns the record number, starts the workflow, and sends a confirmation with that number.
What happens next
Your record number is how staff, notices and payments find your work.
Record number and fees
Keep the record number. Fees calculate from the schedule in effect on the submission date, and later schedule changes do not rewrite them.
Review steps
Staff review the record, ask for corrections where needed, and tell you the next step in plain words. Track status from your home page.
Inspections
When the permit is in a status that allows it, request an inspection from the record.
If something is missing
Fix it on the step the screen names, then save the draft and resume later.
If a required field, contact or document is missing, the review page lists it. Open that step, add the item, and save. A draft is never counted as submitted and never creates a fee, and it does not appear in public search. If the type was chosen in error after submission, contact staff, they log the correction on the record. If an upload fails, check file type, size and file name, then try again on the upload step.
